Camp Wise Aquatics

The Aquatics Department runs a first-class, well-supervised and structured program, operated by trained, certified, and experienced lifeguards and Camp Wise Aquatics Director. All campers are encouraged to swim, and everyone is made to feel comfortable at their swimming level.

Meet the Leader of Our Aquatics Program: Gigi Sarmiento

Introducing our Aquatics Director, Gigi Sarmiento! Gigi is an aquatics professional with experience in intercollegiate swimming and water polo, as well as lifeguarding, coaching, and teaching swim lessons. Through years spent in and around the water, Gigi has developed strong technical knowledge of aquatics along with a genuine passion for helping others build confidence, skills, and a lifelong appreciation for the sport.

Gigi enjoys working with swimmers of all ages and ability levels, from introducing beginners to the water to supporting competitive athletes as they refine their performance. Safety, encouragement, and steady growth are at the center of Gigi’s approach to aquatics, with a focus on creating a positive and welcoming environment for every participant.

As our Camp Wise Aquatics Director, Gigi is committed to fostering a strong community culture while helping individuals achieve both personal and athletic growth in and around the water.

WHAT TO KNOW BEFORE YOUR FIRST DAY

What to Bring:

  • Please bring a bathing suit, towel, water shoes, and sunscreen (and hair band for below shoulder length hair) on all non-field trip days for campers to participate in Swim and Water Play activities

  • Campers must apply sunscreen to themselves. Sunscreens in a spray or stick form are easily applicable and recommended. Parents of rising Kindergarteners may fill out the Sunscreen Waiver Form in their camper applications.

About Swimming at Camp

  • Every onsite day, campers have either swim and/or water play and should bring aquatics gear (other than their field trip days)

  • Campers change for swim time in individual bathroom stalls to support privacy and comfort.

  • Kindergarten campers are strongly encouraged to arrive at camp wearing their bathing suits underneath their daily clothing to help ease transitions. Camp staff may provide additional age-appropriate assistance with changing as needed.

  • Campers who choose not to swim, or who forget their swim gear, may remain with designated staff on the bleachers in the pool area and participate in non-water games and activities with other campers during swim time.

  • Swim rotations are typically 30-45 minutes.

  • The pool is heated to a comfortable 85 degrees.

Grades K-2: Swim time includes free swim, group instructional swim, and pool games. Campers are assessed before they enter the pool and are then grouped in different areas together based on their swimming level. Our younger campers may enjoy the kiddie pool for additional play!

Grades 3-8: Swim time includes free swim and pool games. If campers don't feel like swimming when they get up in the morning, they should still bring their bathing suit with them - they may change their minds! Please note: the swim schedule is subject to change.

Swim Levels

All campers will be assessed by our lifeguards on their first day in the pool and placed into the following categories:

  • Non-Swimmer: For campers whose parents prefer they do not swim or who are only comfortable remaining in the shallow/kiddie pool area with close supervision.

  • Beginner: For campers who are just learning to swim, may need flotation support, and are not yet able to swim independently across the pool.

  • Intermediate: For campers who can swim independently and are comfortable in deeper water but are still building strength, endurance, and stroke technique.

  • Advanced: For strong, confident swimmers who can swim multiple strokes across the pool without assistance and are fully comfortable in deep water.
